Navidad Nuestra & Misa Criolla

  • Koerner Hall 273 Bloor Street West Toronto, ON, M5S 1V6 Canada (map)

The Toronto Choral Society presents the thrilling music of Argentina’s best-known composer, Ariel Ramirez. We are delighted to be joined by the renowned Latin ensemble, Cassava, led by Rodrigo Chavez and featuring tenor Ernesto Cardenas. The 150-voice choir has presented the Misa Criolla and Navidad Nuestra multiple times to sold-out audiences and, together with Cassava, produced an acclaimed recording of both these works in 2014.

Using traditional Argentine instruments and rhythms, the composer gives us a mass setting in the Misa Criolla that is both exhilarating and haunting, using fantastic folk based melodies and integrating traditional percussion. Navidad Nuestra tells the story of the Nativity of Christ, from the angel’s message to the flight into Egypt.

Join us for what will be a fabulous evening of authentic music from South America - Feliz navidad!

We invite you to celebrate a Latin American Christmas at Koerner Hall!

In 2017 we had the pleasure to perform Bach's Christmas Oratorio for a full house at Toronto's most highly regarded classical concert hall.

This year we will acknowledge the diversity of our city by presenting one of our favourite works: Navidad Nuestra (Our Christmas), featuring Misa Criolla, by Argentine composer Ariel Ramirez, honoring Toronto's Latin American community.

Combining Spanish text with indigenous instruments and rhythms, Misa Criolla was one of the first masses not in Latin permitted use of the vernacular in Catholic churches. In 2014, it was performed in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City, at the invitation of Pope Francis.

Ticketing services provided by RCM Tickets.
